Our lineage

A Direct Line to Okinawa

Our dojo is a branch of the Okinawa Shorin Ryu Karate Shinkokai, founded in Okinawa in 1985 by Masanobu Kikukawa and Tatsunori Azuma. Mr. Kikukawa brought the organisation to Canada in 1993, while Mr. Azuma (1952-2012) remained in Okinawa to represent it. Our dojo enjoys a very direct lineage, from the pioneers of Shorin Ryu Karate in Okinawa to the students of today.

The practice

What You'll Train

Okinawan Shorin Ryu Karate is more than a fighting system. It is a total health system designed to help keep those who train regularly healthy for a lifetime. In addition to self defense techniques kata, conditioning, sparring and attention to conduct work together as facets of one traditional art.

Kata: the Forms

Kata are sequences of movements that hold the techniques of the art. Practised regularly, they absorb those techniques into muscle memory and carry them from teacher to student.

Ryukyu Kobudo: the Weapons

The training of traditional Okinawan weapons complements one’s Karate, and vice versa. At our dojo the system of Ryukyu Kobudo is taught from the curriculum of Kokusai Ryukyu Kobudo Hozon Kyokai and includes the study of bo, sai, nunchaku, tunfa, kama, tekko, timbe, techu and eku.

Conditioning and Sparring

Rigorous conditioning and controlled sparring build the strength, stamina and confidence the art asks for, with attention to conduct kept throughout.

James Rault

James Rault has been practicing Karate for 33 years, 23 of them with Masanobu Kikukawa, who he still trains with regularly. James’ stated mission is to pass on what he has been taught as accurately as possible, and to help carry Mr. Kikukawa's legacy forward to future generations.

For families

Give Them an Advantage

At the Karatewave dojo, children train in age groups — 5 to 7, 8 to 11 and 12 to 16. Many go on to do better at school and in other sports as the benefits spread into the rest of their lives. Karate helps at both ends of bullying as well: children who act out learn self-control and find a healthy outlet, while children who are bullied build the confidence to move without fear.

Before Your First Lesson

No. You begin with the basics — the simple forms, conditioning and the etiquette of the dojo — and build from there. There is no test to pass before you start and no obligation to continue after the free trial week.

No. Kids' classes are grouped by age, with separate sessions for 5-7, 8-11 and 12-16 year olds, and Saturday morning is open to all ages. Children learn alongside others their own age.

Traditional Okinawan Shorin Ryu Karate, together with Ryukyu Kobudo, the Okinawan weapons art. 'Karate' is a broad term — it covers traditional Okinawan Karate, Japanese Karate, sports Karate and commercial franchises among others — so it is worth researching any dojo you are considering, including this one.

Up to four kids' classes or three adult classes in the week, depending on who is training, and an adult's three can include the Saturday afternoon kobudo class. No uniform is needed until you decide to join, so loose comfortable clothing and bare feet are enough to start.
